Yorkshire’s link to the Bayeux Tapestry highlighted in weekend celebration.

The Bayeux Tapestry excitement extends into York as the Yorkshire Museum prepares to launch a fun weekend programme of events to celebrate the display of the tapestry at the British Museum. 

York and Yorkshire were also battlegrounds in 1066, with the battles of Fulford and Stamford Bridge fought in the same year, just before the famous Battle of Hastings that became immortalised on the Bayeux Tapestry.  

Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September will showcase objects and stories from the Yorkshire Museum’s collection that have links to the Tapestry and explore life in York during the 11th century in a series of intriguing events and hands-on activities designed for all ages. 

Saturday will be headlined by a special talk from the museum’s curatorial team where visitors will have the chance to handle a rare object not usually on public display whilst finding out what this object and the Bayeux Tapestry have in common. 

Storytelling with Eden from Stories Alive will also take place on Saturday 19 September, inspired by the tales of the Tapestry, introducing colourful characters and providing family-friendly entertainment.  

Families can also get creative in Tapestry-themed crafts on Sunday 20 September, in guided sessions running throughout the day that are suitable for all ages and are designed to encourage learning more about the Tapestry through art.  

Other activities include daily talks from the Visitor Experience Team at the Yorkshire Museum as well as a self-led weaving activity on Saturday to get hands-on with textiles!
