Description
Silver stain roundel with lead surround. A soldier wearing a helmet leads Christ, whose hands are tied, towards Pontius Pilate who is seated on the right. Pilate is having his hands washed by a servant – an illusion to Matthew 27:24 when Pilate symbolically washes his hands aqnd admonishes guilt of the decision to crucify Christ. The scene takes place inside and a number of Pilate’s attendees are present. Behind Pilate is a four poster throne with a canopy and curtains of a luxurious golden fabric. A three-light decorated gothic window can be seen behind Christ. Through the door on the left is a landscape scene with a church spire in the distance. The whole scene enclosed in a silver stain border and in a leaded surround. There is a mark scratched into the glass which reads ‘511 or ‘211’ or ‘S11’.
