Description
Large ceramic teapot trade sign intended to promote the business of John Ould of York, a wholesale earthenware dealer. It is white with blue decoration. Underglaze blue Chinoiserie design, with two houses amid trees on the reverse. John Ould, Ale-draper, became a freeman of the city of York in 1777, but in 1787 his wife Elizabeth is recorded as keeping a pottery warehouse in Thursday Market, where this trade sign was presumably used.
