A Georgian Christmas

Included in general admission | Book Now
This short on-gallery talk is part of our Christmas Talk Series at York Art Gallery, come along to hear about some of our incredible works in the Burton Gallery – with a festive twist!
Discover how Christmas was celebrated in the Georgian era, from the month-long festive season beginning on St Nicholas Day to traditions centred around fireside gatherings, evergreens, gift-giving and Twelfth Night celebrations.
This talk explores how customs such as the Yule log, kissing boughs, seasonal foods and charitable ‘Christmas boxes’ shaped a warm and sociable Georgian Christmas, long before the Victorian period transformed it further.
Please note that talks are subject to staff availability on the day.
