“A Home for Whoever You Want to Be” : Bloomsbury’s Queer Family – Fri 22 Apr 2022

Engage with artworks on display to consider what makes the Bloomsbury ‘family’ queer?
22 April, 12:45pm & 2:30pm, £15
Jon King is a final-year PhD researcher in History of Art at the University of York, specialising in the queer domesticity of Charleston house, the early-twentieth century home of Bloomsbury group artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant.
In this talk, Jon will consider what it is that makes the Bloomsbury ‘family’ queer, and how this can be felt in the objects, paintings and books produced by them. Directly engaging with the artworks on display at York Art Gallery, the talk will consider queer family in the context of Bloomsbury’s class, domesticities, and legacies today.
Jon’s talk will be blended in approach, beginning with a PowerPoint presentation in the gallery Studio, ending with an on-gallery talk/conclusion in the exhibition Beyond Bloomsbury : Life, Love and Legacy.
Ticket includes gallery admission.
